LIFE STAR Training - 11/7/2013
On Thursday 11/7/2013 The Gales Ferry Volunteer Fire Company hosted a night of training with LIFE STAR helicopter. LIFE STAR is a medical helicopter service based out of Hartford Hospital, with one of their two helicopters stationed at Backus Hospital in Norwich. LIFE STAR is called to emergency scenes where there are victims who are severely injured or ill that need to be quickly transported to one of the major hospitals in the region. As an example Hartford Hospital specializes in some things that our local hospitals do not. If patients were to be transported by ground to Hartford it could take up to an hour, where as LIFE STAR can transport from Gales Ferry to Hartford in about fifteen minutes. Members were trained how to safely operate around the helicopter and also how to set up a safe landing zone. In attendance were members from Gales Ferry Volunteer Fire Company, Ledyard Fire Company District #1, and the Center Groton Fire Department. A special thanks goes out the LIFE STAR crew for providing this awesome training.
